Students’ Screen Time Habits
Hi, Carlton families! I recently came across a helpful article about how to talk to your child(ren) about screen time and technology use and thought I’d share out to our school community. I really like how the article discusses screen time using a social and emotional perspective. I definitely plan on using these strategies with my own kiddos!
Quick tips:
1. Show interest in what your student is doing online. If your child feels that you’re truly interested, they’ll be more likely to share information with you.
2. Help your student recognize their screen time habits. Sometimes the habits kids have with their devices aren’t the best for their emotional or physical health. Talk about how we can use our devices in ways that allow for balance with other parts of our lives.
3. Talk with your student about their emotional wellbeing. Help kids recognize how online activities make them feel.
4. Talk about what to do when your student has negative feelings or wants to create new screen time habits. Talk through different strategies kids can try when they notice themselves feeling uncomfortable, worried, sad, or anxious when they’re online.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you’d like access to the whole article. Have a great afternoon!
